About the name
Cone five refers to the Orton pyrometric cone, which has been the standard
of the ceramic industry since 1896. They are elongated pyramid shapes
made of clay and various fluxes. Each cone number will melt and bend
at a pre-determined temperature. Thus, cones are used to determine the
temperature inside a kiln when ceramic ware is fired. Most functional
stoneware pottery is fired at cone 5 (2230).
